Happy New Year!! Welcome, 2016! And welcome back to Spellen of Troy! I’m welcoming myself back, as well! This time last year, (and the year before, for that matter) I was one busy starving writer, frantically churning out nine articles a week for my gig at Brownstoner.com. I wanted to do a Troy blog, but it was just too much, I was chained to the computer, blurry-eyed, and burned out. So Spellen of Troy sat here, unwritten, unread and unloved. This year, things are different. I'm writing less on a daily basis, as I am working on my first published book for Brownstoner.
It’s going to be an updated collection of some of my best articles from the last seven years; stories about the architecture and history of Brooklyn. It’s very exciting, and I’ll be posting announcements as much as possible! The plan is to have the book available for gift giving next Christmas season. There are exciting goings on here, where I live, as well. Now that my daily workload is a bit less, I plan on having time to concentrate more on the wonderful things happening in Troy, NY. 2016 is also going to be a year where I actively improve my health and wealth. Success comes to those who get out there and do. No more excuses! Let's do something!!

Hi Suzanne and greetings from Okinawa. As the great grandson of William Frear I would like to thank you and tell you how much I liked and appreciated your article about the Frear store. I was born in Troy but lived there only a year or so as my father (to be) a Naval officer was attending RPI met and married my mother Anna Frances Frear. Dad was assigned to Pearl Harbor where we were December 7, 1941 at Ford Island. We visited Troy in, I am guessing, 1946 when my grandfather Charles Wright Frear, was very ill. I then visited again in 2007 or 2008 with my wife where we went into the "new" store and found the old one by accident as we had lunch there. Also drove through Frear Park, showed my wife the house where the Frears lived, paid our respects to my relatives, and spent an afternoon at the History Society in the same area. Went to a restaurant, name forgotten, old, quiet and where I was told concert goers frequent. Was delighted to see a picture of my grandfather on the wall. I look forward to reading the rest of your articles.
